The Hadeeth of being Knowledgeable of the Worldly Matters, and Ignorant of the Hereafter

leave a comment »

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radhiAllaahu ‘anhu), that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Indeed Allaah hates every kind of arrogant person, clamoring and loud in the market places, like a carcass at night (i.e. not making prayers but only sleeping), a donkey during the day (i.e. stupid and without understanding, engaged in work and does not pay attention to [fulfilling] the rights of worship), knowledgeable of the worldly matters, and ignorant of the hereafter.”

Below the hadeeth mentioned in Saheeh ibn Hibban, Volume 1 page 273 number 72, the comments given are:

[تعليق الألباني] ضعيف – «الضعيفة» (2304).

[تعليق شعيب الأرنؤوط] إسناده صحيح على شرط مسلم.

Comment of Shaikh al-Albani : Declared Weak in ‘ad-Da’eefah’ no.2304

Comment of Shaikh Shu’aib al-‘Arnaoot : The chain is Saheeh according to the conditions of Muslim.

It is interesting to note that the authentication of this hadeeth is attributed to the Shaykh al-Albani (rahimahullaah), with the claim that he authenticated it in his ‘Silsilah as-Saheehah’.

The fact is that initially the Shaykh had authenticated this hadeeth in ‘Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah’ no.195.

The Shaykh said initially,

“This chain is Saheeh. All of its men are reliable and known to be from the men of Muslim”

However, the Shaykh retracted and declared it to be weak. Hence, the Shaykh removed this hadeeth from ‘Silsilah as-Saheehah’ and placed it in ‘Silsilah Ahadeeth ad-Da’eefah’, Volume 5, page 328, no.2304.

The Shaykh also declared it Da’eef in his book ‘Da’eef Targheeb wa Tarheeb’, Volume 1 page 96, no. 378. [1]

The Shaykh after mentioning this hadeeth in his ‘Silsilah Ahadeeth ad-Da’eefah’ Volume 5 page 328 under the hadeeth no. 2304, said:

ثم تبين أنه منقطع بين سعيد وأبي هريرة كما تقدم في الحديث الذي قبله، فراجعه. وقد كان في ” الصحيحة ” أيضا (195)

“Then it was found out that the chain is disconnected between Saeed and Abu Hurairah, as has been quoted in the hadeeth before this hadeeth. And this hadeeth was also in as-Saheeah no. 195.”

Now let us see what is the Shaykh referring to by saying that the chain is disconnected and it has been quoted in the previous hadeeth.

After looking into the comments of the Shaykh on hadeeth no. 2303, this is what is found. The Shaykh says:

“Then it was found out that the chain is disconnected between Saeed and Abu Hurairah. Ibn Abi Haatim said in “al-Muraseel” pg 52 from his father: “Sa’eed did not meet Abu Hurairah””

Hence the reason for classifying this hadeeth is clear that it has a disconnected chain of narrators. But this is not it. The shaykh gave further reasons for it being weak as we shall see insha’Allaah.

The Shaykh says in ‘Silsilah Ahadeeth ad-Da’eefah’ Volume 5 page 329 under the hadeeth no. 2304:

وقال العراقي في ” تخريج الإحياء ” (2/44) :

” رواه أبو بكر بن لال في ” مكارم الأخلاق ” من حديث أبي هريرة بسند ضعيف “.

al-Iraqi said in “Takhreej al-‘Ihyaa’” (2/44):

“Narrated by Abu Bakr ibn Lal in “Makarim al-ikhlaq” from the hadeeth of Abu Hurairah with a weak chain”

“I have found another route of it, but it is very weak. It has not been quoted.”

“al-Asbahani recorded it in “al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb” (2/200) from the way of Muhammad ibn Abdullah bin Ibrahim with its chain from Abdullah bin Saeed al-Maqbari from his father on the authority of Abu Hurairah in it.

I say: This al-Maqbari is Matrook [2]. And Ibn Ibrahim, he is al-Ashnanee.

Al-Khateeb said in at-Tareekh (5/439):

“He used to narrate false ahaadeeth and attributed them to reliable narrators. He was a liar, who used to fabricate/invent Hadeeth. Al-Daraqutnee said: ‘A liar, a deceiver.'”

But a reliable narrator narrated from him as reported by Abu al-Shaikh in “al-Amthaal”, but the problem is with “al-Maqbari” (a sub-narrator in its chain) and Allaah knows best.”

Conclusion:

The hadeeth has been narrated via 2 chain of narrators.

First Chain: Mentioned by al-Bayhaqi and ibn Hibban, from the way of Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Salamee from Abdur Razzaq from Abdullah ibn Saeed ibn Abee hind from his father, who narrated on the authority of ABu Hurairah.

It is weak as this chain is disconnected as “Sa’eed did not meet Abu Hurairah”

Second Chain: Mentioned by Abu Bakr ibn Lal in “Makarim al-ikhlaq” and al-Asbahani recorded it in “al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb” from the way of Muhammad ibn Abdullah bin Ibrahim with its chain from Abdullah bin Saeed al-Maqbari from his father on the authority of Abu Hurairah

It is weak due to the presence of Abdullah bin Saeed al-Maqbari, who is  Matrook in hadeeth.

Lesson From the hadeeth:

After declaring the hadeeth to be weak and giving reasons for it, Shaykh al-Albani (rahimahullaah) comments in his book ‘Silsilah Ahadeeth ad-Da’eefah’ Volume 5 page 329 under the hadeeth no. 2304:

قلت: وما أشد انطباق هذا الحديث – على ضعفه – على هؤلاء الكفار الذين لا يهتمون لآخرتهم، مع علمهم بأمور دنياهم، كما قال تعالى فيهم: ” يعلمون ظاهرا من الحياة الدنيا، وهم عن الآخرة هم غافلون “

“I say: How applicable is this hadeeth – even though it is weak – to those kuffar who do not pay any importance to their hereafter, despite them having knowledge of many worldly affairs, Allaah Ta’ala says about them: {{ They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world, and they are heedless of the Hereafter.}} [ Soorah ar-Rum : 7 ]

Many Muslims have a large percentage of this characteristic in them. Those who spend their days roaming around in the market places, shouting and yelling in those places, and they neglect the obligatory actions and prayers.

{{ So woe unto those performers of prayers (hypocrites), who delay their Salaat from their stated fixed times, those who do good deeds only to be seen (of men), and refuse Al-Ma’un (small kindnesses) }} [Soorah Maa’oon : 4-7]

Note: Even though the hadeeth is weak, it does not negate the fact that we should be concerned more about our hereafter rather than the worldly life. Footnotes:

[1] Although this hadeeth can be found authenticated in his book ‘Saheeh al-Jami as-Sagheer’, the Shaykh didn’t rely upon this book since it had been in the hands of untrustworthy publishers. The Shaykh never amended the book.

However the Shaykh in latter part of his life began a journey to divide the Ahadeeth of ‘Saheeh al-Jami as-Sagheer’ into a more precise division of  hadeeth terminology of ‘Saheeh li dhaatihi’ ( authentic by itself) and ‘Saheeh li ghayreehi’ (authentic due to other hadeeth) and ‘hasan li dhaatihi’ (hasan by itself) and ‘hasan li ghayreehi’ (hasan due to other hadeeth). This is a colossal task in itself. The Shaykh – may Allah have mercy on him- was sadly unable to complete this work.

[2] Meaning of Matrook:

Linguistically -Abandoned, renounced.

Technically -That in whose isnad is someone accused of lying.
