leave a comment »

It is authentically reported that the Rightly-Guided Caliph, Amir Al-Mu’minin (Commander of the Believers), ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-‘Aziz (رحمه الله), when there was an earthquake during his era, wrote to his agents in the different countries and ordered them to tell the Muslims to make Tawbah to Allaah, humble themselves to Him, and seek His Forgiveness from their sins.

Abu al-Malih al-Hasan ibn ‘Umar (رحمه الله تعالى) said: I heard Maymun ibn Mihran (رحمه الله تعالى) say:

«الْعُلَمَاءُ هُمْ ضَالَّتِي فِي كُلِّ بَلْدَةٍ، وَهُمْ بُغْيَتِي، وَوَجَدْتُ صَلَاحَ قَلْبِي فِي مُجَالَسَةِ الْعُلَمَاءِ»

“It is the scholars that I seek out in every land, they are my desire and I found the rectification of my heart to lie in associating with the scholars.”

al-Muzani said: “ash-Shafi’i (رحم الله) said: “I saw a young man in Baghdad, who, if he said: “Haddathana…” [1] the people would all say: “He has spoken the truth.” I asked him: “And who was he?” He replied: “Ahmad bin Hanbal (رحم الله)”

“I began to study Hadeeth when I was sixteen years old”

He (رحم الله) also said:

أنا أطلب العلم إلى أن أدخل القبر

“I will seek knowledge until I enter the grave”

Don’t Neglect al-Qur’an, My Brother

It was narrated that Naafi’ ibn Abi Nu’aym said: When Abu Ja’far Yazeed ibn al-Qa’qaa’ al-Qaari’ was washed (ghusl) after he died, they looked at the area between his throat and chest and saw that it looked like a page of the Mushaf. He said: None of those who were present doubted that it was the light of the Qur’aan.

Uthman bin ‘Affan رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said:

“If our hearts were truly pure, we would never get enough of the Words of our Lord, and I hate that one day passes with me not looking in the Mushaf.”

[Source: ‘al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah, (7/215)]

Ibn Abi Mulaykah رحمه الله narrated:

“‘Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ used to press the Mushaf to his face and cry, saying: “The Book of my Lord! The Words of my Lord!””

[Source: Reported by ‘Abdullah bin al-Mubarak in ‘al-Jihad’, (56)]

Bishr bin as-Sirri said:

“Verily, each verse is like a date: the more you chew it, the more of its sweetness is released.” Abu Sulayman heard this and commented: “True. It is the case with one of you that if he begins one chapter of it, he wants to read it to the end.”

The caliph, ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-‘Aziz (rahimahullaah) said,

{{ خُذُوا مِنَ الرَّأْيِ مَا يُصَدِّقُ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ، وَلَا تَأْخُذُوا مَا هُوَ خِلَافٌ لَهُمْ، فَإِنَّهُمْ خَيْرٌ مِنْكُمْ وَأَعْلَمُ }}

Moderation in Sunnah is better than Striving in Bid’ah

leave a comment »

The practice of the salaf with regard to matters of Sunnah and bid’ah was always to err on the side of caution and to adhere to the narrated Sunnah for fear of falling into bid’ah (innovations in the religion).

Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

{{ اقْتِصَادٌ فِي سَنَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنِ اجْتِهَادٍ فِي بِدْعَةٍ }}

“Moderation in applying Sunnah is better than striving hard in following bid’ah.”

[Source: Recorded by at-Tabaraani in al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer (10/208), al-Laalikaee in Sharh al-‘Usool al-‘Itiqaad (no. 115) and also by way of Abu ad-Darda in (no. 116), ad-Daarimee 1/72, al-Bayhaqi recorded it in Sunan al-Kubra 3/19,

Shaykh al-Albani (rahimahullaah) said that this Athar (narration/report) is Saheeh (Authentic). Recorded in Salaat at-Taraweeh, page 6]
